Thorn-Clarke Join Sustainable Winegrowing Australia

Thorn-Clarke Winery, who are represented and distributed by RDM Wine Agencies, is delighted to announce they have achieved sustainability Winegrowing Australia certification for both their winery and vineyards.

Joining only a handful of Australian producers, the certification is administered by the Australian Winery Research Institute, Australia’s peak wine research and development body, and includes a comprehensive program of reporting, evaluation, and certification to ensure real outcomes in all areas of sustainable grape growing and winemaking.

Sam Clarke, Co-owner & winemaker at Thorn-Clarke commented “We have been a member of the Sustainable Winegrowing Australia (SWA) for several years but only decided to become certified by undertaking the audit process this year, in time for start of 2022 growing season. Internally this means that we must record and have audited an extensive set of measures across the vineyards and winery. The measures and actions are only the starting point, and we have to demonstrate a commitment over the coming three years to do better across these measures.”

He continues “Examples of these measures are water use per litre of wine produced, energy used by litre of wine produced, diesel consumption per Hectare.

So the measures and actions are extensive and go beyond what is needed for organic certification for example.”

Bastien Martinole, Sales Director of Fine Wines Direct UK commented “We are delighted for Thorn-Clarke to have achieved such an accredited status. Sustainability & eco-friendly practices are paramount to Sam and the team, and we are delighted to be able to share this news with our UK customers”.
